Scary SCOTUS decision
With just 4 months to go, the Supreme Court just rewrote the rules for our Senate race.
Did you see these headlines last week?
This is too important to ignore: In a landmark decision, the Supreme Court ruled last week that political parties – the DC establishment – can spend UNLIMITED amounts of money in direct coordination with candidates. This drastically tips the scales against grassroots campaigns like ours.
I’m about to get in the weeds about campaign finance law, so please bear with me! Here are the facts of the case:
First, years ago, limits were put on the amount that national political parties could spend in coordination with individual candidates. The limit on spending was intended to prevent elections from becoming (even more of) a pure spending competition.
Then, DC Republicans sued the Federal Elections Commission to let them spend unlimited amounts in individual Senate races in an effort to funnel as much money as they want directly into my opponent’s campaign – because apparently the $20 million in outside spending that they’ve already pledged wasn’t enough!
Now, the Supreme Court has overturned decades of precedent to effectively eliminate any limit on the amount of money that DC Republican groups can pour into my opponent’s campaign against me – taking away the advantage we’ve had so far from outraising my opponent with more grassroots support.
Already, dark money groups are pummeling the airwaves to drown out our Alaska first message. They’re lying about my record to prop up the most unpopular senator running for reelection, and they’re doing it at the expense of working Alaskans who are being crushed by sky-high prices and increasing scarcity.
This decision makes all of that worse.
DC Republican groups have near unlimited resources to pour into this race, and with this decision, we’re expecting an onslaught of attack ads within the next few weeks. That’s why we need your help to be ready.
We’ll likely never be able to compete with the resources that these groups are putting behind my opponent. That’s okay – it’s the reality of running a grassroots campaign like ours. All that matters is that everyone who has the means to do so chips in whatever amount makes sense for you right now.
I made a commitment when I decided to run for this seat that I would win this with the backing of everyday Alaskans and working people across the country, not corporate special interests and DC super PACs. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do.
This campaign is powered by people like you, and your support means the world to me. Thank you so much.

Isn't there a way to impeach the SCOTUS for these traitorous and Republican leaning rules they are passing? I realize they are appointed for life (which is so wrong) but those rules were set when people averaged a lifespan of about 50 years! It needs to change! Judges in their 80's and 90's are in danger of many illnesses and most people of that age are retired. They should forcefully be retired at 70!
The US relationshsip with democracy has always been tenuous at best. From intial hopeful phrases such as "we the people" written by white male slave owners (maybe subconsious sarcasm), to the present gerrymandered one dollar one vote system, its going to take more than tweaking around the edges to get anywhere close to real democracy where all people participate in developing a system of governement to beneift all. One option could be to just let the system continue on its current trajectory and just see how bad it gets. This seems to be what those in power want anyway, and if AI works as predicted - its going to get real bad. In the meantime - alternative systems should be discussed, eg Forward Party and others have some suggestions.
